Timeline of the first Voldemort War
This is my timeline for Potterverse events from around the time of Tom Marvolo Riddle's return from his travels to the aftermath of the first Voldemort War. My confidence in the precise timing of events varies. In the past I preferred a timeline where Riddle's return was somewhat later (in the 1960s), which can be accounted for by having Dumbledore teach DADA from December 1956 to Dippet's death or retirement. I still think it is a reasonable interpretation, though I think Rowling meant to have Dumbledore move directly from teaching Transfiguration to the headmastership (making one wonder why he was conducting an interview with someone who wanted the DADA position).
Dec 1956 Armando Dippet dies or retires. Dumbledore headmaster after refusing Minister position for third time. Minerva McGonagall starts teaching Transfiguration.
A few of TMR's followers (already known as Death Eaters) await at The Hog's Head as TMR interviews for the DADA position with Albus Dumbledore. TMR hides the diadem in the ROHT and curses the DADA position. Dumbledore recognizes TMR's appearance as sign of unusually Dark Magic and starts researching TMR's past.
At this time there are rumors about the Death Eaters but neither Voldemort nor the Death Eaters are wanted for any particular crime.
Sep 1959 - Aug 1960 Births of Marauders cohort. (Sirius Black in Sep-Oct?) Lily Evans and Severus Snape in January, James Potter and Remus Lupin in March and Peter Pettigrew?

(Mid 1960s Remus Lupin bitten by werewolf Fenrir Greyback)
TMR starts recruiting heavily among the sons, nephews and sons-in-law of his own schoolmates. The actions of this group are not known at this stage. I believe the scale was rather small, with little political impact.
(Late 1960s TMR wanted by Ministry - I think this is the result of Dumbledore's investigation, I think this is when TMR became wanted for the murder of Hepzibah Smith)

(Christmas break?) 1978-9 Kreacher nearly dies in the course of testing TMR's protections for the locket. Several weeks later Regulus Black and Kreacher substitute a fake locket, Regulus dies, Kreacher escapes with locket.
c 1979 - a significant increase in DE activity, causing loss of public trust in the Ministry and an extremely low birth-rate. This is when the war starts impacting the bulk of the wizarding world, when Voldemort showed his true face and lost the support of the mainstream purebloods, this is when the DEs started advertising their actions by flying the Dark Mark over the site of an attack.

Oct 31 1981 Voldemort kills James and Lily Potter, becomes vaporized when attempting to kill Harry Potter. A piece of his soul attaches itself to Harry. Hagrid is sent to rescue Harry, meets Sirius, gets bike, takes Harry somewhere to recover. (Dumbledore examines Harry, Hagrid reports destination to McGonagall.) Dumbledore tells Ministry (Crouch Sr?) of Sirius' treachery.
Nov 1st 1981 Sirius-Peter confrontation. Sirius arrested, sent to Azkaban. That night Harry is brought by Hagrid to 4PD, placed by Dumbledore at Dursley family's doorstep.

Nov 1981 Lucius Malfoy, Avery and many others claim to have been Imperiurized into serving Voldemort. Eventually most are cleared by Wizengamot.

Later in 1982 Bagman tried and cleared.
Bellatrix, Rodolphus, Rabastan Lestange and Bartemius Crouch Jr attack Frank and Alice Longbottom. The 4 are arrested, tried and sent to Azkaban.
